I’ve found this beautiful Memorial in Vardø, Norway, on Dezeen blog. Designed by architect Peter Zumthor and artist Louise Bourgeois to commemorate suspected witches who were burned at the stake there in the seventeenth century (Vardø witch trials – the biggest one was in 1621).
More details about witch hunt:
Execution statistics: Most modern scholarly estimates place the total number of executions for witchcraft in the 300 year period of European witch-hunts at the order of 40,000 executions. Of those tried and prosecuted, over 80 percent were women. Even in modern times, some countries like Saudi Arabia, still hunt witches.
It’s interesting how sexuality, besides witch-crafting, was easily used against women in hunts and trials. Just check more details about Succubus (“to lie under” is referred to female demon) and Incubus (“to lie upon” is referred to male demon).
There is movie called Häxan (English title: The Witches or Witchcraft Through The Ages) from 1922. It’s Swedish/Danish silent horror film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. You can see whole movie here.
